Paternity and Child Support
In order to establish child support when the mother and father were never married, the mother may file a petition to establish parentage. If paternity is established (either through genetic testing or if the father signed an affidavit of paternity), the court may enter an order of child support. In other cases, DSHS may initiate filing the action, when the State is owed reimbursement for services paid for the mother or the child. In either case, our attorneys can represent mothers and fathers to help protect their legal rights.
Paternity and Visitation
Having your name on the birth certificate or signing an affidavit of paternity is not enough to ensure visitation. Only an order of parentage and residential schedule issued by a Washington court can do that. Whether you are the mother or the father, what an attorney from our firm can do to help is walk you through the process, provide answers and clear explanations, and make certain that your rights are protected every step of the way.
